“Civil Engineer, working since 30 years as research assistant and associate lecturer at the Technische Universität Braunschweig (Germany). Specialized in waste mechanics, aerobic waste treatment and risk assessment of contaminated sites, he worked in this area on a large number of research and technical projects in cooperation with governmental departments, public and private companies in Germany but also in Brazil. He gives lecture not only in Germany but also at PUC (RJ) in the field of waste management and remediation of brownfield sites”.

SANITARY LANDFILL 

On a global scale, landfilling of waste is the most widely used technology for waste disposal, and the percentage will only decrease slowly in the future. Because of waste composition and chemical and biological reactions occurring after disposal, landfills always represent a certain risk to the environment. The biggest challenge is therefore the construction and operation of the landfill in order to minimize the impacts. From the wide field of landfill technology i.a. the following aspects are considered in this lecture: 

• Emissions with focus on greenhouse gases. 
• Barrier systems with focus on top cover systems, as they can also be installed on abandoned dumps. 
• Monitoring of emissions and physical behavior. 
• Closure and aftercare phase of landfills. 
• Remediation of old sites with focus on landfill mining.
