Efficient Computing in the Post-Moore Era
Chalmers University of Technology
Compute performance has grown exponentially, by a factor of two every two years, since the 70s because of the technology miniaturization trends correctly predicted by Gordon Moore. But now, the free lunch is over. Innovation needs to focus on using compute resources substantially more efficiently. In this talk, I will offer a long-term vision as well as short-term innovation opportunities that can contribute to efficient computing in the post-Moore era.
My long-term vision builds on optimization across the compute stack while retaining well-defined functional interfaces. Traditionally, abstraction across layers have been fundamental to deal with complexities but counter-productive to efficiency. As an example, I will show-case a current research effort to manage resources efficiently by cross-cutting abstraction layers. As for short-term innovation opportunities, it is possible to use memory resources substantially more efficient by smart and fast algorithms to compress memory data. I will showcase how such a technology moved ultrafast from research to commercial deployment.
Per Stenstrom is professor at Chalmers University of Technology. His research interests are in parallel computer architecture. He has contributed four textbooks, more than 150 publications and 10 patents in this area. He is a leader in computer architecture having chaired the technical program of premiere scientific conferences such as IEEE/ACM ISCA, IEEE HPCA, IEEE IPDPS and the editorial board of premiere scientific journals such as ACM TACO and the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing. He has also been involved in several startup companies currently as Chief Scientist of ZeroPoint Technologies. He is a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE and a member of Academia Europaea, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and the Royal Spanish Academy of Engineering Science.
