Registration just began for the ideal program for high school STEM and CTE
students and teachers looking for excellent real-world projects: The SMART
Competition (http://www.smartcompetition.org).

In its fourth year, this global competition is designed to combine STEM
education with a significant career and technology (CTE) focus. Last year
students were engaged from around the world.from China and India, across
North America, through Europe to Turkey. The software the student teams
use coupled with the design challenge provided an academically relevant,
student engaging experience.

Student teams redesign a environmentally unfriendly gymnasium to create a
green building on a virtual high school campus. Using computer design and
simulation tools provided by Bentley Systems, students are able to create
concepts that could be the envy of engineering and design firms. The
students incorporate green building design, the use of low carbon
footprint-sustainable materials, localized power generation, energy
conservation and smart grid management into their design. This software
used by the student is also used by engineers, building energy
consultants, and designers who simulate and analyze building energy
performance.

According to Mike Andrews, co-founder of the program, The competition
provides a platform for exploration and design innovation. Weve seen some
creative designs from the students that would surprise most engineering
and architectural professionals. Other program benefits are that the
competition crosses so many different disciplines and there are no
stereotypical barriers.

The competition is open to all high school students who attend public,
private, parochial, charter and home-based schools. In addition, students
from other non-school based or informal education programs will be
welcomed to participate.

The program is designed to attract all students without regard or bias of
gender, race, socio-economic or academic performance level.

Registration is open now. The registration fee is $100.00 per team.
