The recent spectacular progress in modern microelectronics and
information technology has enabled implementation of a complete complex
information processing system on a single chip, global networking,
(mobile) wire-less communication, and (mobile) autonomous computing. A
big stimulus has been created towards development of various kinds of
application-specific embedded and autonomous systems. At the same
however, the spectacular advances in microelectronics and information
technology introduced unusual silicon and system complexity. This
complexity results in a number of new difficult to solve issues that
include: power and energy crisis and increased leakage power,
interconnect scalability problems and on-chip communication problems,
dominating influence of interconnects on all major physical system
characteristics (area, speed, …), decreased reliability and problems
with quality assurance and validation of the highly complex and
heterogeneous systems, growing design productivity gap, time-to market,
and the development costs. These problems cannot be adequately resolved
without an adequate system and design methodology adaptation. The aims of this presentation are the following: * to analyse the problems faced during development of modern complex embedded SoCs; * to discuss which design and design automation concepts seem to be adequate to solve the problems; * to consider application of these concepts to the system-level design of embedded SoCs; * to discuss our new quality-driven model-based automatic architecture synthesis method and corresponding EDA-tools that enable effective and efficient multi-objective architecture synthesis for complex hard real-time embedded heterogeneous multi-processor SoCs.
