Professor Luciano Lima (Doctor in Science) is engaged in research on steel and composite structures and is teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In the last 20 years, he has been working on stability, design, and construction of steel structures, involving activities related to laboratory testing, numerical modelling, advanced analysis, and structural design. His contribution to the development of tubular structures in Brazil may be highlighted by his participation in the Committee that developed the Brazilian Standard NBR16239 – Design of Steel and Composite Structures for Buildings using Hollow Sections (2013). Since 2023, he has been a member of the IIW Sub-Commission XV-E in 2023.
Professor Lima is the co-author of three books: Modeling Steel and Composite Structures. 1. ed. New York: Elsevier, 2017; Dimensionamento de Estruturas de Aço - Comparação entre o Eurocódigo 3 e a Norma Brasileira NBR8800 (in Portuguese), 1st ed. Rio de Janeiro: edUERJ, ECCS e CMM, 2016 and Modelagem de Estruturas de Aço e Mistas (in Portuguese). 1st ed. Rio de Janeiro: Elsevier, 2014.
Furthermore, he was chair of three international conferences held in Rio de Janeiro: SDSS - International Colloquium on the Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures (2010), ISTS15 - 15th International Symposium on Tubular Structures (2015) and 10th ICSAS - International Conference on Steel and Aluminium Structures(2024).
He was head of the Structural Engineering Department, head of the Post Graduate Program in Civil Engineering (PGECIV) and coordinator of the Civil Engineering Research Area of the Scientific Initiation Program for undergraduate students at UERJ.
He has been awarded twice the Anísio Teixeira Prize as the Best Professor elected by the students from the UERJ Science and Technology Centre (2013 and 2015). His mentored students (undergraduate, MSc and DSc) received many Awards from the Rio de Janeiro Engineering Council (CREA-RJ) for their developed works in steel and composite structures, mainly stainless steel structures.
He has been funded by National Brazilian Agencies such as FAPERJ (CNE – Scientist of Our State Program), CNPq (Research Productivity Scholarship Level 1D) and CAPES. His published papers on steel and composite structures related to tubular joints; tubular, angles and starred cross-sections; double-skin composite columns and the use of recycled aggregate composite columns, among other topics, may be found at:
